Home/Cost of ownership/True Cost per Kilometre of a Car
Cost of ownership
True Cost per Kilometre of a Car
All costs included, what every kilometre really costs you — useful for expense claims and comparisons.
Formula
Total cost over the period = Depreciation + Interest cost + Fuel / energy + Insurance + Maintenance
Assumptions
Constant annual depreciation and insurance/maintenance costs as you entered them: an order of magnitude, not a quote. It does not replace real market values or local prices.
How to read it
This is the reference number for expense claims or for choosing between car and train: official mileage rates for an average car sit around 0.50–0.70 per km (or ~0.65 USD per mile in the US), consistent with this calculation.
